Maintaining your recreational vehicle is absolutely essential. Whether you’re traveling cross country in an RV for vacation or going on tour for months at a time with your band, your RV will act as both your transportation and your “home away from home”.
If you already purchased a used RV, hopefully you made the wise decision to download an instaVIN report ahead of time. If you haven’t purchased one yet, but are looking into it, be sure that you get a VIN check along with an RV history report from instaVIN first. Our reports will reveal any major incidents that may have occurred, such as accidents or theft, along with other potential nightmares, like VIN cloning.
Once you’ve found the used RV of your dreams and you’re ready to take it out on the road, you’ll want to inspect it by doing the following:
- Check the tire pressure on all of the wheels. You’ll be carrying a heavy load during this trip, so make sure the wheels will be able to support the weight from the RV. If a tire does happen to pop or flatten, always make sure you have a spare on hand and replace the faulty tire as soon as possible.
- Take a look at the engine to make sure all the fluids are fresh and refilled. Also, make sure that the battery (if it is an open cell) is refilled with distilled water. If you are aware that the battery is old, do yourself and all your passengers a favor by replacing it with a new battery before you go anywhere.
- Inspect the roof and sides for cracks. If there are any, caulk them to prevent water leakage. In addition, caulk any cracks there may in in the AC or heat vents to eliminate the reduction of air flow.
- Make sure to check the propane tank as well. If you smell any gas or see any bubbles, turn it off immediately and have an RV expert take a look. Just like you would do at home, make sure that your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly. Bring extra batteries for them, just in case.
It’s always better safe than sorry when you’re traveling in an RV! And, the last thing you want is to buy a used RV that has more problems than you bargained for.
